Practical Guide to Involving Volunteers from Diverse Cultural and Language (CALD) Backgrounds in Your Organisation

The Practical Guide offers not-for-profit organisations strategies to help with recruiting and involving volunteers from a wide range of cultural backgrounds. It is made up of five modules, two of which deal with specific demographics:  women from CALD backgrounds, and young Muslim Australians.

Module 1 - The facts brings statistics about diversity and volunteering together with research findings and looks at the volunteering context for people from a range of different backgrounds.

Module 2 - Recruitment - A planned approach offers a 4-step approach to researching target communities, getting ready to absorb new recruits and carrying out a recruitment campaign.

Module 3 - Recruiting women from CALD backgrounds into your volunteer program highlights some of the issues to think about when recruiting women from diverse backgrounds, and builds on the recruitment approach of Module 2.

Module 4 - Recruiting young Muslims into your volunteer program looks at the benefits and cultural issues involved in engaging young people from a Muslim background as volunteers, and builds on the recruitment approach of Module 2.

Module 5 - Best practice strategies offers strategies for dealing with language and communication problems, and for managing volunteers from culturally diverse backgrounds effectively and  in accordance with the National Standards on Volunteering. It also contains case studies and scenarios.

The Practical Guide has been developed under the Commonwealth's CALD Implementation Project with funding from the Department of Familes, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, the Office for Women and the Department of Immigration and Citizenship.
