National standards for involving volunteers in not for profit organisations

The National Standards for Involving Volunteers in Not for Profit Organisations promote a model of best practice in volunteer involvement.

The National Standards focus on:

1. Policies and procedures

2. Management responsibilities

3. Recruitment

4. Work and the workplace

5. Training and development

6. Service delivery

7. Documentation

8. Continuous improvement

The National Standards were developed by Volunteering Australia through a consultation process with volunteer-involving organisations of all sizes and types and volunteers themselves over the course of several years.

The National Standards have been written with the explicit intention of protecting the volunteer, the volunteer-involving organisation and customer of the organisation. Compliance with the standards will ensure that volunteer rights are protected, their role is explicit and they work in safe and healthy environments.

The National Standards are national. They describe what elements should be part of a best practice system for involving and managing volunteers. Each standard contains a brief statement that defines the scope of the standard and a set of criteria against which the level of achievement of that standard can be assessed.

The National Standards are supported by an Implementation Guide.

The National Standards and the Implementation Guide can be purchased from Volunteering Australia at a cost of $35.00 each (inclusive of GST and postage).
