Keynote Speakers

Mr Bernard Salt

Business Advisor, KPMG

Bernard Salt is a compelling and entertaining speaker engaged by both the private and public sectors to present a perspective of how social, cultural and demographic change might shape the future business environment. Bernard is a best-selling author of three popular books on demographic change. He is a columnist with The Australian and Melbourne Herald Sun newspapers. He is a Partner with KPMG and heads a group of researchers providing demographic advice to business, and he is one of Australia’s most in-demand corporate speakers having spoken to audiences in all parts of Australia as well as New Zealand, the US, the UK and South East Asia. Bernard is also one of Australia’s most quoted social commentators. He is a regular on many radio and television programs including Sunrise, Today Tonight, A Current Affair and many others. He manages to combine an astute observation of human behaviour and change with hard data. Bernard Salt is an experienced and high-profile presenter who is especially well connected into the business and social issues of the day. His speaking topics consider key issues viewed from a demographic perspective and include the impact of the Global Financial Crisis; the Rise of Big Australia; Workforce Trends; Consumer, Social & Generational Trends and Urban & Regional development

Ms Elaine Bradley

Chief Executive Officer, Volunteering Ireland

Elaine Bradley is the Chief Executive Officer of Volunteering Ireland (Volunteering Ireland is the leading national volunteer development agency in the Republic of Ireland, inspiring, promoting, supporting and facilitating volunteering as a force for social change). Formerly, Elaine worked as a consultant specialising in organisational development, change management and the development of capability through organisational learning. She has worked for over 20 years in the not for profit sector in various roles, including senior management, and has extensive experience as a volunteer in a variety of organisations and settings. Elaine holds a degree in training and education from NUI Galway and an MSc (Business) in Organisational Behaviour from Trinity College.

Professor Peter Shergold AC

Macquarie Group Foundation, the Centre for Social Impact

Peter Shergold was a CEO in the Australian Public Service for two decades. For five years from February 2003, Dr Shergold was Australia’s most senior public administrator, serving as Secretary of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. Dr Shergold is now the Macquarie Group Foundation Professor at the Centre for Social Impact. Dr Shergold has significant Board experience in the public, private and ‘third’ sectors. In government he served on the Board of CSIRO and Centrelink and is now Chair of the National Centre for Vocational Education Research. Since leaving the Australian Public Service he has become a non-executive Director of AMP Ltd (a listed company), Corrs Chambers Westgarth (non-listed) and is the Chairperson of a small venture capital start-up, QuintessenceLabs. He is also actively involved in the non-profit sector and is Chair of the Australian Rural Leadership Foundation and a Director of the National Centre for Indigenous Excellence and the Sir John Monash Foundation.

Dr. Kenn Allen

President, Civil Society Consulting Group (USA)

Dr. Kenn Allen is the founder and president of the Civil Society Consulting Group LLC, a global consulting firm based in Washington DC that works with leaders of business, NGOs, and government to “unleash the power of people to change the world.” He currently is serving as director of the Global Corporate Volunteering Research Project, building on his long leadership in that field. He is past World President of IAVE – The International Association for Volunteer Effort and a former senior executive at the Points of Light Foundation, the national volunteer center in the U.S. He has worked as a consultant and trainer in over 30 countries worldwide.

 

Dr Ron Edwards

Australian Social Inclusion Board Member, Board member of the Graham (Polly) Farmer Foundation

Dr Ron Edwards is a founding board member of the Graham (Polly) Farmer Foundation supporting indigenous youth. He was awarded a Doctorate in Education (University of Western Australia, 2006) which investigated the factors that can promote social inclusion within society, particularly in an educational context. Ron has been actively involved in programs that seek to enhance social inclusion amongst indigenous, homeless and disabled people, as well as in the establishment of low fee Anglican schools. He was a Member of the House of Representatives from 1983‑1993 and now works as a project consultant in the private sector. He is a member of the Australian Government’s Social Inclusion Board and is Chairman of the Third Sector Compact Working Group. 

Senator the Hon. Ursula Stephens

Parliamentary Secretary for Social Inclusion and the Voluntary Sector

Senator Ursula Stephens was elected to the Australian Senate for NSW in 2001 and re-elected in 2007. She was appointed Parliamentary Secretary for Social Inclusion and the Voluntary Sector in the Labor government. In this role she is driving an ambitious change agenda related to the Government’s social inclusion framework and third sector reform, and is also leading the government’s work on a National Volunteering Strategy. Prior to entering parliament she served as Chair of the NSW Rural Communities Consultative Council, was a member of the NSW Rural Assistance Authority, a member of the NSW Board of Vocational Education and Training and Deputy Chair of the NSW Women’s Advisory Council. She has been actively involved in adult and community education and adult literacy in Australia for almost 25 years. Senator Stephens’ vision is for a strong Australian democracy where everyone has the chance and choice to be actively engaged in their communities.

Mr Patrick McClure AO

Ethics Fellow, Not-For-Profit Sector(a joint initiative of the Centre for Social Impact,University of New South Wales and the St James Ethics Centre)

Patrick McClure is a leader in the Third Sector with extensive experience in running successful state and national enterprises across different sectors. He was CEO of the Society of St Vincent de Paul (NSW/ACT) for four years and CEO of Mission Australia for 9 years. During that period the organisation was transformed from a small state-based entity to a highly successful international enterprise with 3,000 staff providing employment, training, housing, youth and family services for disadvantaged Australians. More recently, he was CEO of the Retirement Villages Group within Macquarie Capital Funds. Patrick was Chairperson of the Federal Government’s Reference Group on Welfare Reform, Deputy Chairperson of the Welfare to Work Consultative Forum, member of the Board for a New Tax System and Member of the Prime Minister’s Community Business Partnership. He was Chairperson of the OECD‑LEED Forum on Social Innovation, based in Paris. He has been at the forefront of Australian welfare reform and has dedicated his career to addressing social justice issues and building social capital. He was awarded an Order of Australia (AO) in 2003 and an Australian Centennial Medal in 2001. He was selected as an AFR-BOSS True Leader in Australia in 2005, and was winner of the Equity Trustee’s EQT CEO Award for ‘Lifetime Achievement’ in 2002.

Ms Sarah Hayes

Director of the Global Corporate Volunteer Council, International Association for Volunteer Effort (USA)

Sarah Hayes is an independent consultant specialising in corporate volunteering and successful business-community partnerships
She currently directs the Global Corporate Volunteer Council (GCVC) of the International Association for Volunteer Effort (IAVE) and is
a member of the research team for the Global Corporate Volunteering Research Project.
She is on the leadership faculty of the Points of Light Institute and Hands On Network in the United States. While at KPMG, she founded its “Involve” Program, building from a local initiative into a national, award-winning program. She served on the National Council of Workplace Volunteerism in the U.S. and was on the U.S. Committee for the International Year of Volunteers.
