REFLECTIONS OF VOLUNTEERS IN PALLIATIVE CARE
SHIRLEY LEE
ABSTRACT
Palliative care volunteering calls for emotional maturity, and well-developed self-care strategies. The Family Care Volunteer Program at Mercy Palliative Care in Melbourne, recruits and trains volunteers to provide companionship and support for patients as well as respite for carers in the families’ own homes. Female retirees aged 50–69 years are the mainstay of our palliative care volunteer workforce. As part of the program’s continuous improvement, a survey of new trainees examined demographics, motivation, effectiveness of training and the real challenges of palliative care volunteering. It was found that the great majority of people had some experience of palliative care either as a carer or paid worker, or had experienced the death of someone close to them.
Further, the greatest challenge they felt was making the first visit as a volunteer to the home and
concerns about how they would be accepted.
