Meet Nafis, a student volunteer with UOW Pulse, sharing their journey as part of our ‘Share Your Story’ series.
“What inspires me to volunteer is the opportunity to create meaningful connections and make a real difference in people’s lives. Coming from a different country, I understand how challenging it can be to adjust to a new environment, especially without support. Volunteering allows me to give others the help I wish I had when I first arrived, and that motivates me every day.
I am also inspired by the stories and resilience of the people I support. Whether it’s helping someone with technology or offering a friendly smile at an event, every small action contributes to building a more inclusive, empowered community. That sense of purpose and human connection keeps me going.”
When asked what they’d say to someone considering volunteering, Nafis shares:
“You must go for it, you have so much more to gain than you might expect. Volunteering with UOW Pulse has been one of the most rewarding parts of my student life. It’s not just about helping others; it’s about growing as a person, building confidence, and being part of a supportive community.
You’ll meet amazing people from all walks of life, learn valuable skills that go far beyond the classroom, and feel the genuine satisfaction of making a real impact in your community. Even if you’re nervous or unsure at first, you’ll quickly discover how welcoming and supportive the environment is. So take the first step—you won’t regret it.”
