Meet Hayley, a volunteer with Ambulance Wish Queensland, Buderim Local Ambulance Committee, Red Cross Emergency Services, and Coast Churches Soccer Association, sharing their story as part of our ‘Share Your Story’ series.
Hayley is a passionate and dedicated volunteer whose journey has been shaped by moments of crisis, connection, and community care.
From Crisis to Calling
“Sixteen years ago, I had to perform CPR on my son when he was just three days old. Then, six years later, I found myself doing the same for my best friend’s 17-year-old daughter after she went into sudden cardiac arrest. Both moments were terrifying — but they lit a fire in me. I realised how critical early intervention is. It’s not just important — it saves lives.”
Teaching Lifesaving Skills
That realisation led Hayley to her role with the Buderim Local Ambulance Committee, where she now teaches CPR awareness in schools and community groups.
“These skills can mean the difference between life and death. To now be in a position where I can help children feel less afraid of ambulances and paramedics — to turn something frightening into something a little less scary — feels incredibly full-circle.”
Bringing Comfort to Final Moments
Through her work with Ambulance Wish Queensland, Hayley supports people in palliative care by helping grant their final wishes.
“It’s an honour to help bring comfort, connection, and dignity to someone’s final moments. These experiences are a powerful reminder of the impact simple acts of kindness can have.”
Responding with Compassion in Emergencies
As a volunteer with Red Cross Emergency Services, Hayley supports people affected by disasters and critical incidents.
“In moments of fear, loss, and uncertainty, I’m part of a team offering compassion to those who may be facing the worst days of their lives.”
Connection Beyond Emergencies
Not all of Hayley’s volunteering is emergency-focused. One of her most cherished roles was coaching her son’s soccer team through the Coast Churches Soccer Association.
“It reminded me that it’s not just about sport — it’s about connection, laughter, and being fully present.”
Advice to Future Volunteers
For Hayley, volunteering has helped shape who she is as a mother, a paramedic student, and an active member of her community.
“Start small, and follow what matters to you. Volunteering isn’t about being perfect — it’s about being present. You don’t need special qualifications — just a willingness to care. And the truth is, you’ll probably gain just as much as you give.”
