Meet Curtin University media students who brought storytelling, heart and connection to aged care volunteering. We are sharing their journey as part of our ‘Share Your Story’ series for National Student Volunteer Week 2025.
As part of their university studies, six media students volunteered with Melville Cares’ Friendship Club, a program designed to reduce isolation and loneliness among home care clients. Over six weeks, they delivered a creative and deeply personal project that exceeded all expectations, both in quality and impact.
Their task was to create a five-minute video for their course. What they produced instead was a powerful archive of memories and moments — a true celebration of life stories.
Working closely with 18 older clients, the team built trust, shared laughter, and captured reflections that honour the lives and experiences of every participant. Clients loved sharing their stories, and the result is a moving tribute to joy, resilience, and human connection.
This project is a shining example of what happens when young people bring their skills into the community. Through creative volunteering, these students not only enriched the lives of others — they became part of a movement that redefines care, connection and storytelling in aged care.
Melville Cares’ CEO Maria Davison shared her thanks:
“Thank you for your work on the Life Story and Team Members videos. They are very well presented and really capture the personalities and the life experiences of clients and team members alike… I can see clearly that each of you saw the spirit, strength and humour of the person. The services each person receives just sit in the background. This is what we believe care is all about, so congratulations, you each have become part of how we empower members and each other as team members.”
