Meet Sandy, a dedicated volunteer with Ambulance Wish Queensland, sharing her story as part of our ‘Share Your Story’ series.
Why I Volunteer
“I’m inspired to volunteer because I genuinely believe in giving back to the community. Small acts of kindness can have a big impact, and when we work together as a collective, that impact becomes even more powerful.”
For Sandy, volunteering isn’t just about giving her time — it’s about building community, creating joy, and helping others feel seen and supported.
“Volunteering allows me to connect with others, build a sense of community, and contribute to making someone’s day a bit brighter.”
Wishes That Stay With You
Sandy supports the meaningful work of Ambulance Wish Queensland, an organisation that grants final wishes to people receiving palliative care. From intimate moments to joyful adventures, each wish is personal and powerful.
“Such lovely days were had for these wish recipients, their smiles are contagious, and it’s a privilege to be able to be a part of their day.”
Some of her favourite moments include:
- Taking pre-wedding photos at a daughter’s wedding venue
- Renewing wedding vows after 43 years of marriage
- Seeing meerkats up close — fulfilling a lifelong curiosity
These are the moments Sandy carries with her — a reminder of how deeply a single act of kindness can resonate.
Advice for Future Volunteers
“Find an organisation that you have a connection with or a group that you want to help make a change.”
Sandy encourages anyone considering volunteering to start with what matters to them. When there’s a personal connection to the cause, giving back becomes even more meaningful.
