Meet Myrna, a dedicated volunteer at IPC Health Deer Park, sharing her story as part of our ‘Share Your Story’ series.
Finding Purpose Through Community Volunteering
“Volunteering with the community at IPC Health has been truly inspiring. I’ve had the chance to meet so many people, support them, and help improve their wellbeing.”
Myrna assists with a range of community health programs, including providing transport services, offering social support, and helping out at events. One of her favourite parts of volunteering is simply brightening a patient’s day through conversation and connection.
“I always listen to IPC patients and everyone who works at IPC. It’s important to be present and kind.”
Growing Through Challenges
Myrna has volunteered across programs supporting aged care, disability, alcohol and drug services, and mental health — experiences she found both challenging and deeply rewarding.
“Working with people in these areas really inspired me. I learned how to listen better, and it helped me improve my communication skills. It’s not always easy, but helping others feels so meaningful.”
Advice for New Volunteers
“I would say to anyone thinking about volunteering — it can give your self-esteem and confidence a healthy boost. You’re doing something good for others and the community, and that creates a natural sense of accomplishment. Volunteering can also give you pride and a stronger sense of identity.”
Volunteering in Action
Myrna regularly helps with reception and concierge duties, promotes support programs like Gambling Help and Diabetes Education, and proudly represents IPC Health at volunteer events — including the “Free Bee” community celebration.
“Some of our photos were even shared on the IPC Health Facebook page — it feels good to be part of something that matters.”
