The UN General Assembly designated 2026 the International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development (IVY 2026).

United Nations Volunteers (UNV) is facilitating the implementation of the year in collaboration with Member States, the organisations of the United Nations system and other relevant stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector and academia.

The objective of the Year is: Promote the importance of volunteers for sustainable development.

Volunteering Australia enters the International Volunteer Year 2026, guided by the National Strategy for Volunteering, and invites everyone to join us in endorsing the Call to Action for the Future of Volunteering.

2026 is a moment to recognise the value of volunteering, strengthen the systems that support it, and invite more people to be part of Australia’s volunteering future.

National Strategy for Volunteering

The National Strategy for Volunteering continues to guide how we strengthen volunteering across Australia. Built by the volunteering ecosystem, it sets out a shared vision for a future where everyone can take part and feel valued. Throughout IVY 2026, Volunteering Australia will highlight progress, share insights, and showcase the work happening across communities to bring this vision to life.

Call to Action for the Future of Volunteering

Volunteering Australia proudly endorses the Global Call to Action for the Future of Volunteering led by IAVE. The Call to Action outlines how volunteering can be a powerful force for connected, resilient, and sustainable communities across the world. IVY 2026 offers an opportunity to align Australia’s efforts with international priorities and demonstrate sector leadership.

National Volunteer Week 2026

Theme: Your Year to Volunteer

National Volunteer Week returns in 2026 with a theme that invites people across Australia to get involved in meaningful and sustainable ways. It is also a moment to recognise the millions of people who already volunteer and the vital contributions they make every day.

National Volunteering Conference

16–18 June 2026, Adelaide

The National Volunteering Conference will bring together volunteer managers, community organisations, researchers, policymakers, and volunteers from across the country. This flagship event is a key moment in IVY 2026, providing space to connect, learn, and strengthen the future of volunteering together.

Throughout IVY 2026, Volunteering Australia will share a narrative that brings together the key ideas guiding our work.

The narrative draws on three core elements:

  • The National Strategy for Volunteering, our sector built roadmap for a strong and inclusive future
  • The Global Call to Action for the Future of Volunteering, a shared commitment to strengthening volunteering worldwide
  • National Volunteer Week Theme – Your Year to Volunteer, how giving time and talents can spark joy, and a deep sense of purpose

Our shared story for 2026 will appear across our website, social media, publications, and campaigns to ensure Australian communities and Volunteer Involving Organisations can easily follow the momentum of this important year.
