Izzy – Karitane

You are here: Home / Share Your Story / Izzy – Karitane

May 23, 2024 by Volunteering Australia

Meet Izzy, a Volunteer with Karitane – Shellharbour’s Volunteer Family Connect Progra, sharing their journey as part of our ‘Share Your Story’ series.

Supporting Families

Karitane Shellharbour’s Volunteer Family Connect program provides support for families with children under 5 years old, aiming to increase confidence, support networks, and community connections, as well as decrease the isolation and frustration that can come with early parenthood.

A Privilege and a Joy

“It is a privilege to be invited into a family’s home and share the ups and downs of their parenting journey, whilst building trust and being part of their support village.”

Empathy Through Experience

“Having experienced my own challenges in the early years of parenting, including the COVID-19 pandemic, chronic sleep deprivation, and geographical isolation from my family, I can empathise with families, as well as offer advice and support that I’ve learned from the Karitane training program.”

The Rewards of Volunteering

“What keeps me going is the connection to community, the relationships built with families and stories shared, as well as seeing wonderful progress and confidence families gain through involvement in the program. And the baby cuddles are the icing on the cake!”

Encouragement to Future Volunteers

“Don’t underestimate the positive impact you will have on others by offering your time, nor how much you will gain from giving back. I started this role thinking I might gain some transferable skills for a future career as a psychologist, but I had no idea how much more volunteering would offer – community connection, friendships, ongoing training opportunities, fun activities, joy, and inspiration.”
