Celebrating student volunteers for NSVW24

You are here: Home / News / Celebrating student volunteers for NSVW24

August 5, 2024 by Volunteering Australia

Volunteering Australia and the state and territory Volunteering Peak Bodies, proudly present National Student Volunteer Week 2024! The theme, Generation Impact celebrates the powerful and positive changes students bring to our communities through volunteering.

As we mark NSVW24, let’s celebrate and recognise the remarkable contributions of student volunteers who drive significant social change across various crucial areas. From climate action to advocating for mental health resources and promoting LGBTQIA+ inclusion, young Australians are at the forefront of creating a more sustainable, compassionate, and inclusive society.

Climate Action Champions

Student volunteers are taking bold steps to address climate change. The Australian Youth Climate Coalition (AYCC) is leading the charge with student-run initiatives nationwide, including tree-planting events and climate education workshops in schools.

University students, such as those at the University of Melbourne are actively managing campus sustainability projects, tending to vegetable gardens, and promoting waste reduction.

School Strike 4 Climate movement has mobilised thousands of students to organise and participate in climate protests and awareness campaigns, showcasing the power of youth-led environmental activism.

Mental Health Advocates

Youth advocacy is changing policy reforms on mental health issues, proving instrumental in pushing for increased mental health resources in schools and universities.

ReachOut Australia involves young people in their advocacy efforts, which have contributed to increased government funding for youth mental health services.

Youth mental health organisation Headspace’s Youth National Reference Group provides valuable input on mental health policies and services.

Additionally, Raise Our Voices is mobilising young women and gender diverse people to transform policy and politics through education, campaigns, and community engagement.

Promoting LGBTQIA+ Inclusion

Student volunteers are breaking down barriers and promoting inclusion in their communities by creating safe spaces for LGBTQIA+ students to connect and share experiences.

Many Australian universities have established LGBTQIA+ student groups, such as the Pride Network at the University of Sydney, which organises events and provides support services.

Minus18, Australia’s largest youth-led LGBTQIA+ organisation, runs workshops, events, and campaigns to promote inclusion in schools and communities across the country.

These examples demonstrate the huge impact of student volunteers in addressing some of our society’s most pressing issues.

Let’s recognise and applaud the dedication, passion, and hard work of these young changemakers who are shaping a better future for all Australians.
