Meet Renata, a Fundraising Client Service and Administration Coordinator & Fundraising Volunteer Manager at Currumbin Wildlife Hospital and NTAQ – Fundraising , whose leadership reflects empathy, empowerment, and creative collaboration. In this Share Your Story – Volunteer Managers Edition feature for International Volunteer Managers Day (IVMDay), Renata shares how bold leadership is about recognising the strengths of others, fostering belonging, and building a culture where volunteers feel valued, capable, and inspired to make a difference.
Why Bold Leadership Matters in Volunteer Management
For me, bold leadership is first and foremost about relationships. It’s about understanding each volunteer as a person and guiding tasks in a way that balances their diverse strengths.
Our team includes volunteers of all ages and sometimes with special needs, each bringing unique skills and perspectives. Being bold means showing up for them, trusting them, and creating space for them to contribute meaningfully.
By fostering these relationships, volunteers feel valued, empowered, and confident to take initiative, which strengthens both the team and the impact we make together.
Proudest Achievement as a Volunteer Manager
My proudest achievement is seeing a diverse team of volunteers collaborate and thrive. By understanding their strengths, appreciating their contributions, and guiding them thoughtfully, we create an environment where everyone can shine.
This approach not only helps us achieve our fundraising goals for Currumbin Wildlife Hospital and Conservation but also demonstrates that volunteering is inclusive, rewarding, and meaningful for people from all walks of life.
One piece of advice for fellow Volunteer Managers
Build strong relationships with your volunteers, understand their strengths, and guide their contributions mindfully. Show appreciation, trust their skills, and provide opportunities for them to grow.
When volunteers feel seen, valued, and empowered, they not only perform tasks effectively but also become advocates for volunteering, helping reshape public perception and elevating the collective voice of volunteer managers.
