Samara – MECA

You are here: Home / Share Your Story / Samara – MECA

June 24, 2024 by Volunteering Australia

Meet Samara, a volunteer with Mount Druitt Ethnic Communities Agency (MECA) sharing their story as part of our ‘Share Your Story’ series.

Journey and Inspiration

“In pursuit of a secure place from the war I with my husband and my two young children flee from Iraq. On arrival in Australia on a refugee visa in 2015 I sought assistance from MECA for settlement services. The unwavering support I received from the dedicated MECA team during my tumultuous beginning as a refugee migrant in Australia inspired me to give back. Also, knowing the challenges faced by refugees and new migrants has motivated me, a former MECA client,  to join the agency in 2021 as a Volunteer to assist, inform, and empower newly arrived migrants, refugees, and local emerging communities  This volunteering opportunity helped me to boost my English speaking skills, confidence, and other interpersonal and professional skills.”

Volunteering Impact

“For the past four years, I have been providing administrative, language, and other support at MECA. I feel privileged to help more than 80 families by delivering the essential items to the doorsteps of vulnerable community members in Blacktown LGA through MECA’s Emergency Relief Program ‘Kilos Of Hope’ supported by Honourable Minister Mr. Ed HUsic. I understand the importance and need to raise awareness regarding health in the community. I was part of MECA’s virtual multilingual COVID-19 awareness campaigns and health sessions during the last COVID-19 pandemic. I provide support in promoting and arranging ongoing Health Awareness Sessions and community events.”

Message to Aspiring Volunteers

“Volunteering is a great way to give back to the community and people who have made a difference in your life. It is very rewarding, and we feel good knowing we are of some help to others. We meet new people, learn new skills, and gain valuable experiences. Whether we have a few hours a week or just a few hours a month, our time and effort can make a big impact on someone’s life. Volunteering is also a great way to connect with others and make friends.  Bringing a smile to someone’s face is the greatest fulfilling experience! If you’re thinking about volunteering, go for it—you’ll be glad you did, and so will the people you help.”
