Meet Joel, a UOW Pulse volunteer sharing their inspiring journey as part of our ‘Share Your Story’ series for National Student Volunteer Week 2025.
“For me, volunteering is all about connection—connecting with people, communities, and causes bigger than myself. As an international student, it gave me a sense of belonging and purpose in a new country. It helped me appreciate different cultures and hear stories that I would’ve never come across otherwise—and that’s inspired me deeply.”
Volunteering has also been a powerful tool for personal growth.
“It’s taught me empathy, resilience, and the value of giving without expecting anything in return. Honestly, I would always credit a big part of my personal development to volunteering, and myself for taking that step. It’s one of the most fulfilling choices I’ve ever made.”
When asked what they’d say to someone considering volunteering, they shared:
“Just go for it. You don’t need to have it all figured out to start. Volunteering isn’t just about giving your time; it’s about discovering what lights you up, meeting amazing people, and growing in ways you never imagined.”
“Especially if you’re an international student like me, you have to take this chance—trust me, it’ll shape you as a person. It helps you step out of your comfort zone, feel part of a community, and find your voice in a new place.”
“You’ll make a difference, yes—but what might surprise you is how much it will also change you. Whether it’s a few hours a week or a big project, every bit counts. You’ll gain confidence, new perspectives, and maybe even lifelong friendships. It’s one of the most rewarding things you can do—for others and for yourself.”
